Joe Bradley

Joe Bradley (b.1975) received his BFA in 1999 from the Rhode Island Schoolof Design in Providence, RI. He has been influenced by artists such a Philip Guston, Willem de Kooning and  Jackson Pollock, Bradley has gained critical acclaim through his radical approach to creating art, applying paint to both sides of the canvas, and allowing the paint on the reverse to bleed through the front in anthropomorphic shapes. Bradley is also known for painting flat on the floor, and welcomes(even cultivates) accidental marks and the picking up of paint, dirt, and various other elements from the floor. The artist lives and works in New York City.  Bradley’s work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including ConTEMPorary, New York (2003); P.S.1 Contemporary Art, Long Island City, New York (2006); and Le Consortium, France (2014). Recent group exhibitions include “Silicone Valley,” P.S.1 Contemporary Art, Long Island, New York (2007); “ab-strac-tion-al,” Museum 52, New York (2009); “New York Minute,” MACRO Foundation, Rome (2009); “EXPO 1: NEW YORK (curated by Klaus Biesenbach),” P.S.1 Contemporary Art, Long Island, New York (2013); “The Inevitable Figuration,” Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci, Italy (2013); “The Forever Now: Contemporary Paintings in an Atemporal World (curated by Laura Hoptman),” The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2014–15); and “New York Painting,” Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany (2015). Bradley’s work was also included in the Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2008); Portugal Arte 10, Lisbon (2010); Frieze, London (2014); and FIAC, Paris (2014).
