Bruce Nauman

Bruce Nauman (1941) is an American artist known for his conceptual work based on a broad range of media. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Nauman originally studied mathematics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, eventually shifting his focus towards art, and received his BFA in 1964. Two years later Nauman received his MFA from the University of California, Davis in 1966, where he studied under the artist William Willey. Recognized as one of the most important and influential artists of the 1970s, Nauman develops his unique language of art to express his subversive ideas in the postmodern world. From traditional materials to contemporary approach, such as video and installation, Nauman presents an impressive variety of work that concerns language, wordplay, miscommunication, social space, and studio practice. On top of many achievements in his career, Nauman represented the United States at the 2009 Venice Biennale and was awarded the Golden Lion prize for best national pavilion. He currently lives and works in New Mexico with his fellow artist and spouse, Susan Rothenberg.
